MAJOR EVENTS IN PHILIPPINE INDEPENDENCE

The Philippine Revolution which started with the pivotal Cry of Pugad Lawin / Cry of Balintawak on 23 August 1896 ushered in a period of significant political, social, economic, and cultural change which saw our transition from a centuries-old European colony into a nascent democratic republic whose early steps were immediately challenged by foreign encroachment. After the temporary truce of the Pact of Biak-na-Bato, the tension of a nation yearning to be free from bondage continued to simmer beneath the still surface. Across the country, chapters of the Katipunan continued to meet and organize in preparation for their own struggles for freedom.
